Rent Roll and USB Printing Issues - -

I have received quite a few questions about using Rent Roll 2000 and printing to USB printers.  Many new computers do not have traditional LPT or PRN printer ports any longer.

Below is an email I sent to one person asking about using USB printers with Rent Roll.

Hi,

I guess you are using the non-windows version of Rent Roll.  The problem is that the non-windows version of Rent Roll defaults to recognize the LPT1 printer port, which you do not have on your new computers.

As solution, you could have a technician come out and install a $9 LPT printer card in your computers and just avoid the whole issue of printing to USB.

But, if you want to print to the USB printers with Rent Roll, below is the technical info.

If you are familiar with networking, we solve the problem of printing to USB by sharing the USB printer and then redirecting the LPT1 port to that shared printer.

Rent Roll still prints to LPT1, but Windows redirects that printing to the shared printer on the USB port.

The only way to do this is by using the command prompt and using the NET commands.

After you share the printer on the USB port, you create a batch file with the following command:

This command redirects the LPT1 printing to the shared printer which happens to be on the USB port

Substitute the words computername and printername with your actual information.

Put the batch file in your startup folder so that it will run each time the computer is started.

Hint, also, be sure the way you have named your computer, in My Computer properties,  does not have any spaces in the name.  Also, your printer name should not have any spaces in the printer Share name.

You share your USB printer by going to Start, Printers, right click on your printer and select Sharing.

If you have not used the command based networking commands, then if you have a computer tech that is say 45 years old or more, he should have some experience with those.

Hope this helps you out.

c.
